Janie Spahr blog

I attended Making a Difference Together, Put Your Toe in the Water, Making the Connection, and Don't Get Caught Holding the Bag. I loved the session on the student organizations. I learned things about our organizations that I didn't know before today's session. I was impressed with the students and their presentations. It is because of these organizations that these students are willing to give up their time to better themselves and to come and talk to us about their life-changing experiences. They made a lasting impression.

In Making a Difference Together, we used the professional learning community setting to discuss the relationships among CSOs, funding, varied learning strategies, student assessments, internships and apprenticeships. We ranked them in order from the most important to the least. It put things into perspective for me because I had never really thought about how all of these concepts are linked.

My favorite session, however, was the lawyer's session the liability issues for teachers taking field trips. This really hit home for me because I annually take 110 students to New York City. It really hit home for me. I will definitely change the way I do my paperwork and documentation from now on.

  1. Hello, well I tried to comment on several blogs and I got an error. I thought it would be fun to respond and comment to other blogs. What did I do wrong?
Sussex session was informative and I realized how on the mark Morgantown High is related to the PLC's. Unfortunately, MHS doesn't promote our CTE programs at the MTEC center...yikes, I am sure many do, but, we have almost 1800 students and about 250 from our high school. It is going to come back around...I am sure...skills are needed...College is not for all students.

Our school has had PLC's and we have those 4 goals as well.
Perhaps, we need professinal development with our MTEC center. We are in different locations.

I always say "I want to walk my talk"
She apologized for rushing through an activity yesterday. I respected her comment and feel we should do the same with our students. It reminded me of how "being real" with the students is a must.she used the cheers theme to say how we would like people to know our name...lol! I agree with focussing on the student as the customer...so to speak. It is amazing how students will step up if you let them know you care and will push them to their potential.
Scott Nash was a plethra of information...I am anxiously awaiting his list that he shared relating to all the "free" technology available.
I am so excited to learn all of this information and anxious about having the time to pull it all together. I guess that is why I am doing this fantastic TIS...ing.

    Then I went to CORE
www.donatelife.wv.org it takes 90 seconds to be a donor, need last four digits of social and driver's license.
108,000 people in WV are waiting for a donor.
90% agree and yet only 30% are registered on their license. Jason Ray or Grey a formet Tarheels mascot ended up saving four people because of organs and others because of tissue donation. We watched a tear jerker about his parents and the walk of those he saved.

  2. This is the rest of my blog! I think the most useful session so far has been Let's Star in the Movies. Teachers at our school already use movie maker, and when students have questions they always come to me. I've never used it before. So yesterday I downloaded it during the session and hopefully be ready to help students this year when they need it. I also created a webtop already and am so excited about using it myself. I've already contacted my vocational director to discuss using this schoolwide.

I can't wait to get Kathy Mace's email with everyones ideas about Business Education. This is somoething we really need to work on statewide. Everytime you go to a conference like this you find out things others are doing and wonder why you didn't know about it. That session I think will turn out to be very helpful. We just need to do more sharing like that.

The WVBEA meeting was my first since I just joined in June. I met several new people with whom I can share ideas. I am looking forward to doing that this school year.

I think the most exciting session is yet to come though! I can't wait to hear what everyone has to say about the performance assessments. I sure hope they are corrected for this year.

Overall, the sessions were great, and I can't wait to use everything I learned. It's amazing that there is so much out there that you don't even know about, and I am excited to learn more.
