Gwen Miller - Friday July 30

I went to the breakfast but did not stay for the meeting. I attended the first session on the performance assessment. I was glad to hear that completers might be dropped down to 3 core classes instead of four. I hope that all the proposed changes will take place before the spring assessments. The second session was the Marketing Area meeting. Betty gave us a CD with all the forms and dates and information. It was a very short meeting.

Friday July 30 -- Conference Notes

The breakfast meeting hosted by the WVACTE was attended by some of those in attendance. The WVACTE leadership provided updates on the progress or lack of progress of membership in the state organization. It concerns me that as present members retire, the new CTE instructors do not see the need and/or to support the national and state CTE organization.
With the membership at the state level, the national organization will not have the financial and grass roots support to promote CTE to the political leaders in government.
Debra Kimbler presented to the Administrator affiliate the "GED Option." This program hopes to address the high rate of high school dropouts and give students a option to have a graduation credential. From Ms. Kimbler's presentation, the program sounds similar to a program that was offered in Cabell County during the late '80's and early '90's. Having the students combine a academic component with a CTE program.
In the closing session, Dr. D'Antoni elaborated on a 5 and 10 year vision. This vision was developed during the department's retreat last week. There was 6 key points that will assist the leadership in the planning stage of reform.

As for next week, I will be making the commute from Huntington and my cell is 304-544-9990.

Conference Notes 7/30

Abby,

After our meeting this morning, I attended the session pertaining to project based assessments for completers. I agreed with all the suggestions that were made today. Professional development for teachers and administrators would be a great way to start so we can know exactly how to prepare our students. I believe students should be given the rubric before testing so they know in advance what the stardards for the testing will be. I was especially excited about the idea of allowing a student to be a completer with three required courses in the cluster. In the past, we have always had many students who lacked only one course to attain completer status. Hopefully these suggestions will be implemented.

The second session with Kathryn Mace could have been much better if we were not in the same room with other groups. The information she was presenting to us was very useful, but I simply couldn't hear everything she was saying. I am looking forward to working with her; I believe she will welcome our input.

I will see everyone Sunday evening. I will be staying at the Marriott. My cell is 304-261-6866.

Performance Assessment with Donna Burge-Tetrick
This session provided open dialogue about the necessary changes to the Performance Assessments. Overall the discussion was positive, reassuring and benefical.

Vision for CTE with Kathy D'Antoni
I sat in on part of this session with my director. Dr. D'Antoni began by stressing marketing of our programs, students and success stories. Focusing on purposeful and personalized (another P word) instruction for students was also discussed.

Got home, hugged the big girls, kissed the hubby and started dinner. Tomorrow will be laundry day, church on Sunday and start all over again! Hope everyone has a great weekend.

WV TIS-CTE: CTE Annual Conference, July 2010

WV TIS-CTE: CTE Annual Conference, July 2010: "Part I: Please list all sessions you attended, along with the day and time they were presented. This would include general sessions. Part II..."

Started off by attending breakfast with the ACTE. It was the slated business meeting and I was not well informed about much of the issues they were voting on. The breakfast was good and I won a nice shirt as a door prize. I also found out that I won a vendor raffle prize (career and professional development software suite) so I am very glad I went!!

The next thing I attended was the session on the completers test and related issues. Although I do not have to give any of these tests, I was glad to see how receptive Ms. Tetrick was to teacher input and trying to support us as we try to do the best for our students.

The last meetng I attended was the information and discussin by Ms. Mace. She had some really good information but it was very difficult to hear much of the conversation. They kept two groups in the same room and for some unexplained reason, we had both groups right next to each other in the front of the room trying to talk over each other.

Have a great weekend everyone, and I look forward to seeing everyone next week.!
Chuck
Well it is Friday, I am finally home for the second time today!! First went to the meeting at 9:15 with Abby, who told us to be sure to blog and what to bring next week , Then went to my HOST meeting with MR. MARK MOORE!!! and I will have to say that today was the best day of the whole week for me, he was very informative , talked about Thinkfinity(our school had already began exploring this site so it was not new to me) but alot of the information he gave us about the webtop was very helpful. It will be so nice to come home and pick up where I left off at school if I need to, this will be a great thing. Also love that they are kinda giving us our own personal "schoolbook" where we will be able to communicate with our coworkers, and students, I know that this will be a big hit with the students as soon as they are introduced to it. I also liked that as educators we will now be able to get some YouTube videos if we want for our class, this also will be a big perk:) overall I will have to give today an A+, I will have to say the big surprise this year was the number of attendees at the conference I felt there were about one third less people this year, so after leaving right before noon I got home around 1:50 and had to climb right back in and go get my daughter from band camp at Camp Ceasar in Cowen so just got home around 7:30, ready for bed.....but have to water the flowers that are wilted and drying out...lol looking forward to seeing everyone next week.

Last Day

This was an interesting week. topics ranged from financing to testing and everyhing in between. today's first topic on last years completers testing was interesting and I am glad it didn't turn out to be a gripe session. I think that next year will go much smoother. The last session would have gone better if we could have been ion a room separated from other classes. Overall, I was impressed with the quality of the conference and look forward to next week!

Friday's Blog Rmorgan

WV TSA

Kathy Gillman had some really good points about using the TSA program in middle schools as a preparatory for Skills-USA and for deciding a career in a technical school. Was also nice to know that you had pre-approved CSO materials for all grades K through 12 which made this a wide reaching program of study and something you can reach kids that may not be aware of what Career and Technical centers offer. It would be a great recruitment tool for low population centers if teachers and administrators would allow time for instructors to mentor middle school candidates in the TSA programs. Would also be a great tool for cooperative learning between academic and tech centers with ready made curriculum's.

WV SkillsUSA Updates

Cobey and Rick presented last years numbers for medals won, national attendance, and new information about where Skills-USA will be held in a couple of years. Its nice to know that the organization has grown so large that they are going to be using a new facility in Louisville Ky. to accommodate the massive growth. The most productive part of the session was finding out what improvements over last years competition to make it run smoother with less confusion. Some of the new features will fix several problems like people leaving early, integration of non contestants and the public, and they are putting in an immediate grievance system to correct any perceived discrepancies in judging or procedures. Overall it was a very productive session and was pleased it didn't turn into a gripe fest.

My overview of the conference.

After teaching for 10 years this is my first conference and I feel now that I should have been coming to these some time ago. I have learned alot about how the system works and what goes on at the state level and with the new faces in upper seats of power this will be the year for Career Tech. Ed. in West Virginia. I hope we dont try to get a million items incorporated in the first year but prioritize them from most important (ie. curriculum, testing, monies). I didnt agree with a few comments of Curt Bunting on how much time needs to be spent on coordinating between teachers mainly because his inclusive school setting that he presides over is very different than our stand alone facility. Other than that my thoughts on what I saw and heard are very positive towards this school year.

Breakfast at ACTE meeting

Had breakfast and listened to their talk. I will probably join for the liability coverage. They seem to have a lot of positive things going on including leadership. conferences at cedar lakes.

CTE Conference Part Duex

Hello all. The General session this morning was informative and I especially liked the ideas he had on the book study. Keeping a focus on a topic throughout the year would be beneficial. After the general session, I went to parlor B,C and listened to Susan(?) on treating our students like customers. She and I think a lot alike! I have said time and again that students are my customers and I am selling the education. If I do not make the sale, the customer will not benefit from our product. We need to learn from our marketing cousins and spend more time promoting our products through FAB (Features, Advantages, Benefits). After that session, Scott Nash helped a lot of people with an overview of some free and open-source programs we could use in the classroom. Just to expound upon his theme, open-source is always free, but free is not always open source. Windows movie maker is a perfect example of a program that is not open-sourced, even if it is free. I encourage everyone to go to http://sourceforge.net and look at their offerings. Mr. Nash only scratched at the surface! Speaking of Windows Movie Maker, Mark Moore did a fantastic job of explaining how WMM can be used as a formative and summative assessment tool. I cannot wait to start writing a rubric for that this year! Finally, Mrs Mace gave us a very nice talk on the future of business Ed, although she left quite a few unanswered questions upon reflection. WVBEA rounded up the section with a frantic plea for members. It made me uneasy about the quality of the organization. I would not dream of asking potential members to sign up for an organization while at the same time telling us they have not had a president for the last two years and by the way, would any of us like to be pres. now?
Till next time

Steve B
Well, I am not sure what went wrong I thought I had already posted....anyways went to opening session and he talked about collaboration with the academic teachers which I feel is a great concept, getting the academic teachers on board is sometimes a challenge they are busy with their own classes. We then had lunch which I felt wasn't near as good as yesterday, but was good. The afternoon sessions for HOST were about student learning styles which was a good review for me and it reminds you to keep in mind that all students learn differently and to try and incorporate as many different techniques in teaching as you can to try and capture them all. Then we had a CORE session which is about organ and tissue donation, a very tear jerking afternoon but also a review and reminder that every minute in life is precious and that the need for organ and tissue donation is very real and needs to be addressed plus you can also apply for a 2500.00 grant from them. A very good day.

CTEConference

Day 2: General session interesting. Wonder how we will implement the PLCs at school. We already have a common planning time so may work well with in school collaboration.

STEM Academy sounds a lot like PLTW, not sure about the differences. Speaker said there was no competition between the two.

Green Initiatives: I think Mark Swiger was suggesting there be LEED programs instituted at the CTE to meet future industry needs with trained employees.

Thursday

Hi Abby,
I attended the General Session and enjoyed listening to Curt Bunting. I ended up having lunch with him and we discussed the differences of salaries across state lines. He was very informative and I liked the idea of shared planning time. All of our grade level teachers have a shared planning time, however the Related Arts teachers only get to meet twice a month. The academic teachers have 2 planning periods ( 1 personal and 1 team) however the Related Arts teachers only have one.
After the General Session we meet briefly as a TIS group and then I attended "Be Our Guest" presented by Susan Rice. I like the idea of using a Service Guarantee with my students. I am going to integrate it with my current Classroom Management Plan.

Next, Scott Nash presented Open Office and Free Desktop Applications. WOW! Loved It! I us many of the applications he presented, however I learned about many more I can use in my classroom. I hope to get Steve to present at our school this year.

After lunch, the FACS teachers went to the Clay Center where we were meet by Lewis Ferguson who gave us an overview of what the Clay Center is about. Next, Donna and Susan presented how we can use PLC's with our students. Brandi and I suggested we use Blogspot for FAC's teacher networking. After the presentation on PLC's, Lewis gave us a guided tour of the Clay Center and then allowed us to explore on our own. The Clay Center is such a wonderful resource.

Today was very beneficial and informative. I plan to integrate many of the programs and resources presented today in my classes this year. I enjoyed networking with my fellow TIS participants and FACS instructors.

WV TIS-CTE: CTE Annual Conference, July 2010: "Part I: Please list all sessions you attended, along with the day and time they were presented. This would include general sessions. Part II..."

Hello Abby
Today I started at the general assembly 8:00 to 10:00 and listened to Curt from Sussex County talk about PLC's. Then we met as a TIS group. As soon as the TIS meeting was over I went to the food line and happened to be behind Dr. D'Antoni, she was very pleasant to talk to! The next thing I attended was the Business Ed. meeting where we discused treating our students as "customers". The theme was Be Our Guest and was very informative. At 11:15 I left the Business Ed. meeting and attended the Aerospace meeting with Captain Craddock. It was a little light on presntation, but it was very informative and the material is deffinateley something I will use with my classroom kids and my afterschool program! Then I went to lunch and was fortunate enough to have Curt and Gene Coulson accept our offer to eat lunch with us. The conversation was very stimulating and informative. After lunch I went to the business meeting where Kathy Mace gave a great talk about the future of Business education in the state of WV. When this was over at 3:00 we immediately started a discussion with the WVBEA and were informed about their mission, goals and the need to get new blood in the organization. My favorite part of the day was the session on treating the students as customers.

Conference Notes 7/29/2010

Abby,

I could really relate to what the speaker in our morning general session was saying since I used to teach at a multi-county vocational school. Due to declining enrollment, I had to transfer back to one of the county high schools in order to have a job. I like the concept of Techademic. I am going to discuss this with my principal with the hope that our school can collaborate class assignments between academic and career tech and hopefully have some common planning time.

Be Our Guest--students as customers--certainly gave me something to think about. The session on open source applications was very helpful. I can't wait to try some of the new applications. My favorite session of the day was Let's Star in the Movies. I just started using Movie Maker so this session was exactly what I needed; however, I think all of us were really excited when the speaker informed us about using a WebTop account.

The Focus on Concentration session gave all of us time to share our ideas on how to improve business ed. It was interesting to see what each of us are doing in our counties. I hope to see some of our suggestions implemented in the future. To end my day, I joined WVBEA.

Conference Notes

Gwen Miller -- Thursday, July 29

Sessions I attended:
Collaborative Teams in CTE - 8-10
Be Our Guest - 10:15 - 11
Open Source and Free Desktop Applications 11-Noon

I came in late for the general session. He talked about common planning times which would be great. Actually it would be great to HAVE a planning time. The next session was about treating students as customers by doing things like knowing their name. We were given a copy of a teacher service guarantee that was very cute. We also took a customer service skills quiz where you interchange the word customer for student. I think that would be something to share with our teachers. The open source and free software presentation was very informative. It needed to be longer. I am like most of the teachers at my school in the fact that its nice to hear about all the "stuff" you can do with programs, but I need to SEE and DO the application for it to do me any good.

Day 2 of How I spent my summer. Rmorgan

First attended the highly anticipated Global 21 Performance Assessment Updates seminar. This seminar should have been at least 2 hours long and held in the small areana and mandatory for all CTE instructors. Being part of the original test making I saw alot of the same questions that came up over a 18 months ago when we started the process being asked again. Its good that they realize that there were major flaws in the flow of information between departments and it's nice to see that they are being addressed quickly this time through. If you didnt attend this seminar I recommend it highly if you want to be a part of the next wave of test design and procedures to send an email to rgillman@access.k12.wv.us.

TOOL-U

Was a great introduction to a FREE program that can not only benifit many of your classrooms at your facility but also helps us TIS wanna be's with ready made content for many of our programs that we will be helping in the future. Tool-U classes are 24/7 online courses that can be done from home or school with complete grading systems, over 400 course and end of course tests readily available for use. They include almost all aspects of each schools curriculum including a ready made WVEIS check off sheet to show which CSO's will be covered by their programs that they will email to you on request. After seeing their presentation I could imagine our instructors utilizing ready made FREE content in their classrooms with the help of a TIS.

MUWV Call before you dig.

Fairly interesting because it did explain the legal issues about unsafe digging around utilities, cables, and gas lines. Had some cool videos of houses exploding and some disasters due to negligance. Had some good info about how the system works when needing information before excavations and how its a non profit organization and is available for everyone.

Cisco Packet Tracer Applications Part 2

Was a more in depth look at how Packet Tracer should be used in the classroom as an advanced teaching tool. Had some realy nice features and tips of short cutting the errors that pop up during server-router-switch mismatches. Also went online with the actual Cisco Academy and showed alot of features between virtual and real time problems. Overall was very interesting and learned even more than the first session.

STEM Academy

Was O.K. but not realy viable for career and tech schools. Seemed to me to be geared for a project based learning system and not a real world learning system like we have in our schools. Might have been a bit sophmoric for my students who would have gotten bored quickly with the kiddie type projects. Would be a nice home schooling tool or self paced system of learning.

How I spent my summer-Part I by Rmorgan

Overall I have enjoyed many of the aspects of the conference especially the three I attended today. The following in order were the ones I chose to be a part of and my takes on them.

Computer Certifications through Certiport.

Being CompTIA certified made me a bit prejudice about other testing programs mainly because Certiport isn't the industry standard where CompTIA is. That particular session was more a sales pitch instead of an information exchange. I can see a few benifits for lower level learning and certifications but not as an industrial certification.

Cisco Packet Tracer

Was a very good presentation and very informative. Loved the free software "Packet Tracer" that was given out in a full version. I attended that particular presentation mainly for an alternative class to compliment the lighter network criteria that is part of the CompTIA certifications. The presentors gave some realy good reasons to suppliment any network type class with a stronger and more indepth version of networking.

FIRST Robotics and 21st Century Learning.

Probably was my favorite session of the day. It was brilliant for the presentor to allow the actual students who built and competed on the project present the project. Was some very good information and sources for funding. I also agree we should be a state wide competition should take place to pick a representative for WV.

I have been teaching for 10 years and this is my first conference and was realy suprised how much information that I have missed on the state level by not attending.

Gwen Miller -- Wednesday, July 28

The sessions I attended today:
First General Session - 10 am to Noon
Making a Difference Together - 1-1:15 pm
Put Your Toe in the Water - 1:15 - 2 pm
Making the Connection 2-2:45 pm
Don't Get Caught Holding the Bag 3-4pm

The multimedia presentation at the beginning of the general session was a good idea. Something like that could be compiled on a school or county wide basis. Dr. D'Antoni's presentation was very good and held my attention. The techademics she mentioned is something we are trying to do at MCTEC with the technical high school concept. The different personality types activity in the second session was interesting and maybe be something that could be done with students. The third session provided interesting information about student organizations. I liked hearing from administrators, teachers and students. I found the chart in the next session to be confusing. They did provide a hand out about using CTSO's to connect to curriculum standards. The last session was the one I was looking forward to but was greatly disappointed. The speaker said "ah" about a thousand times and many of the teachers seemed to know much more about the subject than the lawyer who was speaking. The only thing new I learned from that session is that bullying by text message needs to be addressed.

Janie Spahr blog

I attended Making a Difference Together, Put Your Toe in the Water, Making the Connection, and Don't Get Caught Holding the Bag. I loved the session on the student organizations. I learned things about our organizations that I didn't know before today's session. I was impressed with the students and their presentations. It is because of these organizations that these students are willing to give up their time to better themselves and to come and talk to us about their life-changing experiences. They made a lasting impression.

In Making a Difference Together, we used the professional learning community setting to discuss the relationships among CSOs, funding, varied learning strategies, student assessments, internships and apprenticeships. We ranked them in order from the most important to the least. It put things into perspective for me because I had never really thought about how all of these concepts are linked.

My favorite session, however, was the lawyer's session the liability issues for teachers taking field trips. This really hit home for me because I annually take 110 students to New York City. It really hit home for me. I will definitely change the way I do my paperwork and documentation from now on.

Conference Notes

Today, I attended the following sessions:
First General Session from 10 a.m. to noon.
Making a Difference Together from 1 p.m. to 1:15
Put Your Toe in the Water from 1:15 to 2 p.m.
Making the Connection from 2 p.m. to 2:45
Don't get Caught Holding the Bag from 3 to 4 p.m.

I found the First General Session to be the most inspirational. Lots of good information in it that I plan to share with my colleagues. Making a Difference session contains a neat actitity which I might use in my classes at the beginning of the year for an ice breaker. Making the Connection exercise should have been used in conjunction with the testimonials about CTSOs. Dont't get Caught Holding the Bag reminded me that being a CTSO advisor is as scary (liability wise) as I always thought it was.
