Good Morning fellow TIS’ers! It is good to be back in the swing of things vis-à-vis the TIS program. My September actually started in August as did most of yours did, I am sure;-) I have transferred to a new school from the one I so loved last year, but Buffalo HS has proved to be a little gem. In some ways, BHS is more technologically advanced than was Winfield HS. It is nice to be able to bring my wireless laptop to school and use their Wireless routers here to do my day to day activities. No longer am I tied to that infamous blue cable! However, the disadvantage of coming to such a small school is that they are somewhat distrustful of “outsiders”. I have come up against a solid wall when it comes to introducing anything new to the staff. We use Novell here, and have had this server for many years. However, the staff is uncomfortable with using such a simple tool as the IM feature that allows communication between teachers. They would rather take time out of teaching and go to another’s class and speak face to face.
ReplyDeleteI have offered the use of the camera to many of the teachers, including my fellow business teacher. She politely, but firmly turned my offer away and then ordered two cameras out of our allocation money! On the bright side though, four of my students have decided to do an oral presentation using photo story three, which I have been able to have installed on twenty-four computers in the school. No small feat considering these computers have deep freeze installed on them, requiring two techs to come in and do the install.
Yesterday Buffalo participated in ground breaking ceremonies that signifies the start of a new chapter at BHS. Construction of a brand new Buffalo HS will begin shortly! We are a part of a grant called “Next Generation” that should bring a plethora of new technology to the students and teachers. I cannot wait for what is in store for BHS!
Well, it has started!! I have been working!! So far, I have "trained" a few teachers on PREZI (great response..no more ppt), I have told several teachers about websites, I have sent out a letter explaining what my role of a TIS is and included a list of resources, I have scheuduled Shannon Carnes from RESA VII 3 times to help with SMART/INTELLI board trainings (she is wonderful!), and I talked with my superintendent about the importance of having TIS positions in the schools.
ReplyDeleteThere is so much more that I need to do! I need to find the time...set aside the time, to schedule TIS into my calendar. I think that the response from the teachers has been great. They have expressed the need/want/desire to learn more. Hopefully, I will be able to help them!

Hello Abby and everyone else!!
ReplyDeleteIn the month of September, I was involved in training on Project Based Learning lesson plan development. There were several teachers who have never integrated technology into their classroom, and I was able to help allay any of their fears and help them begin developing lesson plans for their classrooms. I also helped one of the teachers develop an integrated lesson that incorporated Flip cameras and Moviemaker into student created infomercials for their chosen type of land formation.
I helped our VoAG teacher incorporate Flip cameras into her lesson where she had the students make commercials for “dirty” jobs to market their ideas to TV producers looking to film future episodes.
In my own classroom, I had the students make “Claymation” figures, digital cameras, Moviemaker and Audacity to create Internet Safety commercials. They really seemed to enjoy this activity, but there were some technical glitches when it came to making the pictures transition smoothly enough to give it that “animation” look.
I really needed the break to get back into the school year, but now I am really looking forward to chatting with everyone and I cannot wait to see everyone in Florida! Janie, sorry about the phone tag today. Call or email when you get a chance, and tell Donna I said hello.

Hello Everyone,
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a great year. This has been a busy fall for me. I’ve been on the road every weekend to see my daughter play soccer. I’ve been to Wheeling Jesuit University several times and I visited California University in Pennsylvania and Ohio Valley College in Parkersburg.
I started this school year as the new kid on the block. I made the transition from Martinsburg High to Musselman High. My white board has been mounted to the wall, my data projector has been mounted to the ceiling, and I am still waiting for the county technology team to install the software for my whiteboard onto my laptop. In the meantime, I use my laptop and data projector every day.
I have been guiding my students through a variety of technology activities at the beginning of the year. Each student has applied for a WV e-mail account. My BCA classes have been completing a variety of assignments using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
All my lectures in Intro to Bus are presented to the students through PowerPoint. In an effort to go paperless, I post my assignments for my students in a Class Data files folder on the school network. Student assignments are submitted to me on the network.
I have been assisting other teachers with minor technology issues such as e-mail and EdLine.
In an effort to encourage the student body at our school to use more technology, students had to log on their Edline account to vote for the Homecoming queen and court.
I am looking forward to the technology conference in Orlando. I just completed my registration! Can't wait to see all my fellow TIS mates there.
I have:
ReplyDelete1. Had two trainings with my staff of LiveGrades
2. Worked with our new sysop on setting up new folders and updating software from the server
3. My MultiMedia II students are creating their first monthly video of the events that took place during the month.
4. Worked with the entire staff on the process to follow for the Links program that we are using during our AA’s.
5. Daily updating of our school webpage.
6. Worked with the GearUp after school Credit Recovery program using Odyssey and the daily challenges we have had with the program
Hello everyone as you can tell my school year has been very busy...new director, new principal, lots of changes and the TIS conference gave me lots of ideas but made me realize how technologically challenged our school really is, we were suppossed to get some bandwith upgrade the first of November but we are still waiting, I assisted with some tech training at the beginning of the school year but I forget what they were, sad huh? anyways I have been working on the computers with the students but not as much as I want to. In mid October I set-up a virtual surgery project with my students and the A&P studens but was sadly dissappointed when it would pause and sputter, felt so out of the link with technology when other schools were asking all kinds of questions but did feel better later when speaking with a co-worker from another school that ALL the schools were pretty much having the same trouble that I did, guess that is why they were asking so many questions....
